A hair prosthesis (or cranial prosthesis) is a custom-made wig specifically designed for patients who have lost their hair as a result of medical conditions or treatments, such as Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis , Trichotillomania, Chemotherapy, or any other clinical disease or treatment resulting in hair loss. This is a clinical term that is used by insurance companies when handling claims from those who are experiencing hair loss and seeking insurance coverage for the medical device or wig.
What isn't common knowledge is that insurance companies often view involuntary hair loss as strictly a cosmetic issue and as such, do not cover the cost of cranial prosthetics. What's more is that high-quality cranial prosthetics made from human hair can cost many thousands of dollars.
By spreading awareness about this issue, we hope be a catalyst for change in the insurance industry and radically revise the way these medical necessities are regarded and covered.
